IPL #2 Participation- Teacher Interview

For this IPL, I interviewed my old 3rd grade teacher over email. I emailed her a list of a few questions about teaching and some about technology in the classroom and was pretty surprised at the answers. I chose to do my third grade teacher because technology has evolved immensely since then. At the time that Mrs. Clinton taught me, smart-boards had just come out and they have already come so far. Here are a few of the questions and her answers below.

  1. How have you changed your teaching style over the years?

Over the years, I have become more confident in my teaching methods.  I have also been privileged to have attended many different workshops where I have learned to use a more cooperative learning style.  I prefer my students to work in groups where they are all engaged and learning at the same time. I also use A LOT more technology in the classroom which is more effective when teaching.

  1. What are the effects of technology Integration in your classroom?
The main effect would be the student interest.  The kids love to use technology in the classroom.  They enjoy creating Google slides, researching projects, or even drilling facts on a computer as opposed to paper and pencil.  If I use technology, they are more attentive and focused in class.

Overall, these answers made me very hopeful. I was curious to see how younger students would respond to technology, as phone usage can be a big problem with even third graders these days. But seeing that she said it made them more attentive was really hopeful.

  1. Great conversation and I am also happy to hear the voice from the teacher side. One of the biggest advantages of tech is it catches people's eye because it is different from what they do everyday. However, at the end of the day, I would love the tech piece seamlessly weaved into the classroom and students are using it for a specific purpose (e.g., information literacy) instead of simply being attentive.
