IPL #2 Participation- Teacher Interview

For this IPL, I interviewed my old 3rd grade teacher over email. I emailed her a list of a few questions about teaching and some about technology in the classroom and was pretty surprised at the answers. I chose to do my third grade teacher because technology has evolved immensely since then. At the time that Mrs. Clinton taught me, smart-boards had just come out and they have already come so far. Here are a few of the questions and her answers below. How have you changed your teaching style over the years? Over the years, I have become more confident in my teaching methods.  I have also been privileged to have attended many different workshops where I have learned to use a more cooperative learning style.  I prefer my students to work in groups where they are all engaged and learning at the same time. I think that the excel data collection tools can be used best for self evaluation as an educator. if you were to enter your grades and see a majority of lower scores, it can be helpful to see where your students are. If your students are getting a low average, you may have to start reflecting to see what you can change in order for this average to go up. Another thing excel data collection does it la everything out for you. Once you can visually see a list of your students scores, it can make it easier to visualize what they may need to improve on and what you can improve on as a teacher. It directly lays out what your students scored lower on and are therefore probably struggling with. For example, if you're teaching 10th grade psychology and you see your average scores for the chapter one test on intro material is high, you know you taught it well and it is probably a relatively easy chapter. The flipped classroom is intended to be an educational technique in which a lot of classroom materials and in class information may be available online to the student to access ahead of class or just whenever. With this, class becomes the designated place to work through problems and concepts that students did not understand on their own. In this way it is almost like instruction is done at home and homework is done in class; hence the title of flipped classroom. Overall, this concept is risky and it puts a lot of emphasis on individual student responsibility. This could be a very positive or very negative thing. For teachers, the ability to integrate instruction outside of the classroom and in it becomes essential because there will always be certain topics that students can not teach themselves. I had not used Diigo before this class and I love it! The extension within the browser is really helpful and organizational because it can keep your educational and social bookmarks separated, if you were to keep all school related bookmarks in Diigo. In this way, it can be a great tool to use individually  On top of this, it is a great way to promote student interaction of ideas. Classroom wise, this can be great for viewing your students and peers overall findings. I also like how it can bookmark and post the same website multiple times because it is then easy to see which website most students found helpful. One thing that is so great about PowerPoint In is that it can appeal to both visual and audio learning. In this way, it can definitely appeal to all levels of bloom's taxonomy.
